Hampton's masterly adaptation, the basis for the 1988 film Dangerous Liaisons is at once daring and delicate, exhilarating and intimate. The notorious Vicomte de Valmont is determined to seduce the virtuous Madame de Tourvel while her husband is away. Meanwhile, the Marquise de Merteuil sets out to corrupt the young Cecile de Volanges, fresh from the convent and soon to be married.
Crackling with wit and wickedness, Les Liaisons Dangereuses depicts the decadence of the aristocracy shortly before the French Revolution, as Valmont and Merteuil play their cruel games and pervert pure innocents with devastating results.
